A 25-year-old Santa Ana man is arrested for deadly hit and run

A 25-year-old Santa Ana man has been arrested and charged with a number of different crimes including driving under the influence (DUI), vehicular manslaughter and hit and run. He's alleged to have struck and killed one bicyclist and injured another in Newport Beach in the early morning hours on Saturday, July 15, 2017.

He is alleged to have killed a 41-year-old man and his unidentified companion while they were riding their bicycles in the northbound direction along Newport Boulevard at around 1:20 a.m. Saturday evening. It was as the pair approached the roadway's intersection with Industrial Way that they were allegedly struck by the suspect in this case, an act that is believed to have killed Costa Mesa man on impact.

Witnesses to the fatal accident reported having seen a dark-hued SUV fleeing the crash scene. They noted he drove a few blocks down the road before ultimately pulling over on the side of the road.

When officers with the Orange County Sheriff's Department arrived to investigate the accident, witnesses directed them to the man's vehicle. It's after they interviewed him that they placed him under arrest for felony DUI, vehicular manslaughter with intoxication and hit and run charges.

He was later processed through the Men's Central Jail, located in Santa Ana, on those charges. It's during his booking that jail officials decided to hold the man in lieu of releasing him on the $100,000 bail in the case. He was expected to be arraigned in court on all charges on Tuesday, July 18, 2017.

Individuals charged with felonies such as these face severe penalties for their indiscretions. It's important to note that there are plausible defenses for each of these charges, though. In learning more about the circumstances surrounding your charges, an Orange County, California, criminal defense attorney may be able to help you avoid a lengthy jail time in your own case with the right defense strategy.
