A DUI conviction could include use of ignition interlock device

On Behalf of Ron Cordova, Attorney-At-Law | Jan 23, 2016 | Criminal Defense, Firm News |

In California, there are a number of penalties you may face if convicted of driving under the influence. These penalties can include fines, and in some circumstances, jail time. Another possible penalty the court may impose is the use of an ignition interlock device. An IID is a piece of apparatus that is installed in your car that measures your blood alcohol concentration. If the IID detects your BAC exceeds a preset level, it will disable your car.

On the plus side, by having the IID installed, you can continue to maintain your ability to legally drive. However, the onus will be on you to meet a number of requirements. First, you will have to arrange to have the device installed by a state-approved company. You will also be responsible for having routine maintenance and calibration performed on the device, which must be done no less than every 60 days. The cost for installation and service comes out of your pocket. This is in addition to any other fines the court may hand you.

While having to use and maintain an IID for the duration of your punishment may be inconvenient and even seem a bit intrusive, it is still better than having your driving privileges completely revoked. If you are arrested and convicted of driving under the influence, you may find that being ordered to use the IID is the best deal you can get.

When facing DUI charges, there is not guarantee as to the exact level of punishment you will receive. As such, having the experience and guidance of a California DUI attorney could prove beneficial. The attorney may be able to help you retain your driving privileges so you can continue to effectively perform your daily routine.
