California couple wake up to criminal drug charges by police

A California man and woman have been charged with possession of stolen property and drugs after police found them asleep in an illegally parked car. An arraignment has been held, and the two await further court action.

On the morning of Oct. 6, at approximately 10:20 a.m., Yolo County police claim that they discovered a couple sleeping in a car in Clarksburg. Police allege that the car was parked illegally at the Merritt's Landing Boat Ramp and contained a 37-year-old man from Elk Grove and a 35-year-old woman from Sacramento. Also in the car, the Yolo County Sheriff's Department says, were items that included identification documents, mail and other information for personal accounts. Police claim that these items were stolen. Authorities also allege that the car contained drug paraphernalia, shaved keys meant for burglary and .18 grams of methamphetamine.

The two occupants of the car have been charged with possession of methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, stolen property and burglary tools, as well as the transportation of controlled substances. The woman has additionally been charged with giving false information to an officer. The two are currently in Yolo County jail, with bail set for the man at $20,000 and $160,000 for the woman. An arraignment was held at Yolo County Superior Court on Oct. 9.

The charges the couple face are serious. An attorney who has experience with felony drug offenses may be able to evaluate the evidence presented by the state and recommend a course of action that may lessen or eliminate the penalties. This can involve a plea bargain with the government or a successful defense in court.
