In California, the laws surrounding theft are fairly unforgiving. The problem is that no matter the scale of the crime, once it is on your record, it can have damaging consequences for your reputation and your employment prospects. There are many reasons individuals might end up being charged with theft, but the result is the same. In a recent case in California, one woman has been charged with using stolen credit cards.
The 27-year-old Merced woman is believed to have made use of the cards in purchasing telephone calling cards. These are suspected to have been for the benefit of two gang members currently in custody. After searching her home, officers reputedly found a number of checks and credit cards. These are reported to have been stolen from various mailboxes and vehicles.
A 26-year-old man was also arrested during the search. He is believed to have been in possession of methamphetamine. The investigation was initiated after reports of a credit card theft April 2. No charges were filed initially, as the case required further consideration. However, if this young woman is convicted of theft, it could have severe consequences. It needs to be considered, however that the cards were found in her house rather than in her possession.
Other residents of California may be able to sympathize with this woman. Whether she was involved in the alleged theft or not, the process of criminal investigation can be extremely taxing. If you are facing theft charges, it is important to plan your response carefully. An attorney may be able to help you present your side of the story in a manner that favors you. With the right guidance, you can increase your chance of minimizing legal repercussions, or having the charges dismissed altogether.
