Dealing with drug trafficking charges

Drug laws in the United States have become strict as the government continues to try and control the production, transportation and marketing of banned substances. The exact punishment for drug offenses depends on the type and quantity of drug you are caught with. The most common forms include marijuana, cocaine and heroin.

Having possession of a banned substance with the intention of selling is called drug trafficking. It is considered a far more heinous crime than drug possession. Federal and state laws are in place to make sure drug traffickers receive severe punishments. Federal laws determine the minimum sentence for drug offenses. States have their own prosecution methods, but they must abide by Federal laws. The Federal Government stands firm when it comes to drug offenses. Major drug cartels have been under the government’s radar, which is why severe steps have been taken. Problems arise when low-level traffickers receive punishments, but the bigger players remain safe. Drug laws have become a controversial topic because of contradicting views regarding their effectiveness.

Substances that have been classified as controlled are overseen by the government. Their use and distribution is governed by law. All controlled substances have been divided into different schedules. These schedules determine the severity of the substance.

Being charged with drug trafficking could land you in prison with a range of 3-5 years to life. The charges are severe, and you will need an experienced defense attorney. The attorney will devise a strong defense strategy for you or negotiate a plea bargain which helps make sure you spend the minimum amount of time in prison.
